Target Audience:
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of surgeons who perform vascular access procedures for hemodialysis patients.
Program Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Utilize ultrasound to increase the use of suitable autogenous conduits for dialysis access.
- Select specialized autogenous access options when standard surgical approaches are not suitable.
- Develop interdisciplinary partnerships to provide comprehensive expert management of hemodialysis accesses for patients.
- Identify and treat causes of early maturation failure to maximize useful AVFs.
- Treat the common cause of arterial steal and distal ischemia with salvage of the access fistula in most cases.
Invited Speakers:
William Jennings, MD, is a Professor of Surgery, Mary Louise Todd Chair in Cardiovascular Research, Vice Chair of Surgery, University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Tulsa. Dr. Jennings is active in dialysis access surgery, teaching, and research. He is a member of the Vascular Access Work Group and ESRD Network 13 Quality Improvement Committee. Dr. Jennings has published extensively on vascular access and ultrasound evaluation for AV fistula surgery. He has been a national leader in the surgeon education programs of the Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative.
Michael P. Lilly, MD, is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine and Chief of Surgery at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore. He specializes in vascular surgery, including dialysis access, and is a recognized national expert in vascular ultrasound. Dr. Lilly has been involved with the Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative since 2004, initially as the representative of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). He currently serves as the National Surgical Consultant to the Program.
Jack Work, MD, is a Professor of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Work is the Director of Interventional Nephrology at Dialysis Access Center of Atlanta. He is past President of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN) and is on the Board of Directors of the Vascular Access Society of the Americas (VASA). He served as the co-chair of the National Kidney Foundation K/DOQI Vascular Access Committee and on the National Leadership Group for the Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative.
